Blog #9 Reel and Artist Statement

Cinematography & Videography Spring 2014 Reel from Skylar Brown on Vimeo.

As an artist the majority of my inspiration comes from what’s around me  and the things I love, such as music, traveling, history, animals, and of course my friends and family. While many of my peers aspire to be a part of narrative motion picture my passion lies with music video. Music has been a part of me all of my life and I have been working as a music photographer for the past two years capturing the energy of concerts in a still photograph. I want to bring life and movement to my images to enhance the emotions a song invokes while giving my audience a visual story and maybe even bring their attention to something that they might otherwise ignore. I really enjoy experimenting with a lot of different techniques that I have learned through still photography over the years. Sometimes they work out sometimes they don’t, but I’m still learning and I’m bound to make mistakes. Who knows maybe one day one of my mistakes will become my signature technique.

  1. Gorgeous images! A really different way to go, focusing more on spot (concert style, nature, etc) video as opposed to narrative video, but a really slick presentation with some great images! Awesome music too!

  5. While your nature shots were beautiful, my favorite shots were the shots capturing people. I loved that you captured people in everyday life doing everyday things; it wasn't staged, it was real, and you made something beautiful out of that. Great job!

  8. Oh look, it's TCF in LA footage. Haha YAY. It's awesome to finally get to see it. And it came out beautifully, good job. Loved the full circle your reel made from peaceful nature to silly people back to peaceful nature.

  10. Good shots, good variety, good music. The behind the scenes shots were some of my favorites, but your nature shots were beautiful.

  12. Skylar,

This is a really interesting reel! The shots were very unique and also gorgeous! A neat approach that definitely shows your passions and talent. My one note would be that the music seemed really weird to me at the beginning, like a weird mix or something. I wasn't sure if it was the music or sound from the clips. But, just a small note!
Also... my favorite shot was definitely the people dancing at 1:04. LOVED IT!!!!

  13. Great editing to the music, especially at the beginning. I would raise the volume of the song at the beginning because it's barely audible and distracts from the beautiful visuals, it wasn't clear to me if it was a song or the wind so I was thinking about that instead of fully investing in the images. Overall though, great job! Good variety, I would have liked to have seen some shots from your work in this class, I think there are some gems of shots in both your documentary project and scene assignment.

    1. The sound is part of the song so there isn't much I could do about it. I was fine with it just because it sounded natural enough to go along with the nature clips. However I understand what people are saying and how it can be confusing especially if someone doesn't know the song. Thanks for the feedback.
